Mourning
~ a poem of grief ~
I take a knife to my skin
And let the bleeding begin
Removing the part of you
That had grown its roots in, I’m
Digging each rhizome up now
Carving my heart out
Into proportional sections
The despair, the desire, the love
And the obsession
May the bloodletting cleanse
My soul of our sins
That of my limerence and
Years of dependence, as well
As your denial, addictions
Manipulation and rejections
I watch the crimson droplets descend
Rivulets of raw emotion running down
My arms, staining my fingertips
Rust colored and reddened
Smelling the iron and regret
Filling my senses,
The way that your touch
And your tears once did.
This is a funeral arrangement
But there is no body to bury, or burn
When the love has died, it’s only
The broken hearts of the lovers
Who know what’s left to mourn.
