Homelessness
~ a poem of release ~
I miss the familiarity of you
Your skin both the softness and hardness
Of home - your sleeping breath in my ear,
Gentle, how you pulled me in -
Cozy warm, I could snuggle up there,
Safe and secure from the world,
Your arms a structure around me -
A fortress of promise and protection.
I imagine you like a cottage in the woods:
Vines creeping over the roof & down
Across the stones of your walls
Birds chittering in the rafters
And a warm hearth, welcomed,
I tuck my feet under me,
Breathing in the steam of a hot tea,
Admiring the library of stories
Your bookshelves could tell me.
And it breaks my heart, now
How happily I thought to myself, then -
That I could have stayed there
Among your beloved belongings
For all of my days.
But the problem with building
A home out of someone else
Is that always, at some point,
You know it is not your own doing, and
You know that you will have to leave.
I know, now - that I could never make
A home out of you, my love.
Nor you, of me.
